Did you know SAIT offers 3, 200 awards for students? The Entrance Award application deadline is approaching quickly. I would encourage all new students to have their application in by May 2, 2011.

How do you apply? Well, you need to visit mySAIT.ca and click on the myStudent tab. You will then be able to access the application. Only online applications are accepted. To view the awards booklet, just click here.

Did you also know that we offer online advising services? Ask your questions about SAIT programs and services without having to come in. Just visit furtheryourpassion.ca to chat with advising representative. Online advising is available Monday - Friday from 11 am - 1 pm.

AIM student becomes a social media celebrity

Administration Information Management student becomes social media celebrity

It was only last summer that one of our graduates placed first worldwide in an international Microsoft Office competition, and already another Administrative Information Management (AIM) student is looking to take over that top spot.

The only difference is that, this time, she'll be posting her training experience for the world to see on "Career Factor," an online reality show created by Microsoft.

Caroline Weilinger, Class of 2011, was selected as one of nine individuals from across the world to be featured in the online program, after being nominated by her instructor Janine Violini.

Over the next few months, she will share her training progress using a variety of social media tools (blogging, videos, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to name a few), as she gears up for the Certiport 2011 Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office taking place July 31 to August 3.

Movie Stars at SAIT

Just before heading out for the winter holiday, my teammate Sarah and I had the opportunity to film a recruitment video. It was one of the coolest days at work. However, working in front of the camera is a lot harder than it looks.

Sarah performed very well delivering her lines. We had the use of a teleprompter, but I still managed to mess up nearly every time. Fortunately there will be no blooper reel.

I wanted to remind everyone SAIT will be hosting a fall Open House on October 22 and 23. This is an excellent opportunity for students and parents to learn about all of the amazing programs SAIT has to offer. For more information, click here. Keep in mind, students can submit one online application during Open House at no charge! Plus there is a draw for $1,000 tuition credit.

After Open House, we will be hosting a number of Information Sessions. One targets interested future students and one will focus on students who have already submitted an application. Visit the events calendar on sait.ca for more details.

November 17, we will be hosting over 100 employers on campus looking to hire SAIT students. This event is for SAIT students and alumni. The next career fair will be taking place in February. Check out the picts below.

Summer days are here again

We hope everyone is enjoying the summer sunshine (and avoiding the hail at all costs). When the sunshine is out, make sure you take the time to enjoy it. We want everyone relaxed and refreshed by the time they join us in the fall.

Everyone at student services is lonely on our quiet campus. We are certainly missing the students during the summer months. However, we are still in contact with many of you each and every day. Not only that but we are still working hard to provide the best services to our current and incoming students. Here are a few things we have going on at SAIT:

Montana Band Camp Blog

Hey everyone!

I hope you are all having a fantastic summer. Today we have Jennifer Russell blogging about a group of students visiting SAIT from the Montana Band. Jennifer is the Chinook Lodge Student Advisor. She works with our Aboriginal students here at SAIT. Check out her blog below:

Since July 4, we have had 24 youth from Montana Band and their chaperones visiting SAIT for a two week summer camp. During their stay they have been attending classes on trades or media, taking part in several field trips, and enjoying many extra-curricular activities. During their evenings, the campers and their chaperones have visited places like the Calgary Tower and the Glenbow Museum.

The camp is divided into two groups; trades and media. Those two groups are then split into two, one week programs for Broadcast TV News and Digital Photography, and Carpentry and Machining. This week the youth have been progressing through their lessons on Digital Photography and Machining.

The Photography group has gone on two field trips this week to the Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park, and today will pay a visit to Riley Park. They have obtained some very dramatic photographs. The Machining group has been on a field trip to Laser Equation to study laser cutting and the students have done work with metal casting and moulding.

Student Employment

For this blog post, we have a guest blogger. Gary is a Power Engineering graduate who used our Student Employment Services to land himself a great job. Check out what he has to say about Student Employment Services.

Student Employment Services is an invaluable resource for students who have no idea about cover letters, resumes, interviews and networking.

I attended SAIT for two years in the Power Engineering program and I frequently attended Travis Ouchi’s employment workshops so I could obtain all the helpful hints he had to offer. It increased my confidence in looking for work when I graduated.

I knew of other students who would only attend one of Travis’s workshops and they felt that was enough. For me, attending more often helped me to re-write my resume and cover letter for each job I was applying for. I learned to write my resume to target the job I was interested in.

The most helpful workshop for me was the interview workshop. It is just like a real interview. The questions Travis asks appeared when I was interviewing with companies.

The online job bank has hundreds of jobs to apply for and was constantly updated with new jobs. All students should access this service as these people are looking for SAIT graduates.

New eats on campus

SAIT Polytechnic has expanded meal options for students. Last fall, Tim Horton’s opened its first campus location. I was really excited by this as I have a weakness for carbs, especially when they are in the form of yummy donuts.

Tim Horton’s joined our other culinary outlets; Starbucks, 4 Nines Dining Centre, the Chartwells locations, The Gateway, and The Odyssey. SAIT has something to whet everyone’s appetite.

Our Starbucks is conveniently located on the main floor of the residence tower. I should also mention, it is a real Starbucks, with all the great coffees and desserts you enjoy. I have a dislike for fake Starbucks, because they get my hopes up but it is never quite right.

If you are looking for free-trade coffee and delicious sandwiches, The Odyssey is for you. This student-run establishment is located in Campus Centre, and showcases some amazing art, created by students at Alberta College of Art and Design.

4 Nines has awesome meals for students. What is cool about 4 Nines is the meals are prepared by students in our Professional Cooking program. Our deli and bakery, The Market Place, provides delicious baked goods and cuts of meat at a super price. I have impressed my mom with baking I have picked up there.

For students who are not into meal preparation, Chartwells provides a variety of meal plans for students. Check out the options here.

The Gateway Restaurant and Bar is also located in Campus Centre, and has good food, fast service and low prices. It is a great place to see a band, hang out with friends or grab a quick bite. I recommend the deep fried macaroni. So good!

Finally, for those of you looking to save some money and cook for yourselves, SAIT has a Sobey’s on campus, located right in the residence building!

When our Recruiters are travelling around the country, they are awesome at answering questions about SAIT programs and services. However, what if you have questions later on? No worries, we got it covered.

You can always call SAIT for more information at 1.877.284.7248 or email us. If you are in the Calgary area, feel free to stop by Student Services and have your questions answered in person. This is a great way to get a feel for the campus and meet with our fantastic advisors.

Sarah, Jason, Michelle or I will answer your questions about admission, funding, residence and student life. This is another option for students to get the information they require.

Graduation 2010!

Last week I was lucky enough to “volunteer” at SAIT’s 93rd annual graduation ceremonies. All kidding aside, this is an awesome event filled with excited students, proud parents and honoured faculty.

We had more than 1,300 graduands cross the stage to shake hands with SAIT President and CEO, Irene Lewis and to receive their credential. Graduation takes place at the Southern Alberta Jubilee, which is a beautiful venue. One that makes our students feel special.

I was manning the Information Booth, which was a pretty good gig. I got to meet all the students and their families as they entered. Having been part of the ceremonies for the past six years, I think this one had the best attendance I have seen.

The class of 2010 will now join over 155, 000 alumni. That is an incredible number! SAIT has alumni in over 50 countries around the world.

Payin’ For It!

For those students who missed the previous two Payin’ For It sessions at SAIT, we are holding a third one on June 7.

This session covers everything new students need to know about student finance, scholarships and bursaries and Alberta Works funding. Have questions about the session? Check out the blog I posted in early May.

Get a career you didn't even know existed!

One of the greatest features of a polytechnic education is the opportunity to connect with educational opportunities that prepare you for careers you had never considered. The reason you have never considered them is not because they do not lead to exciting and rewarding career opportunities, but rather you may not have been aware these educational opportunities even exist.

We can hardly blame you, in some cases they are the only programs of their kind in North America. Engineering Design and Drafting Technology provides you with relevant experience and training in Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and is transferable to careers in industrial building design and oil and gas processing.

Other programs, such as Exploration Information Technology and Broadcast Systems Technology may sound strange and foreign to us. However, Exploration Information Technology is an interesting hybrid of information technology and earth sciences, preparing you for exciting careers in the energy sector.

Broadcast Systems Technology prepares you for a career working with the technical equipment in the broadcast industry (with the average graduate earning an average annual income of $79,000).

I know what you’re thinking, these sound like amazing opportunities. Are there more? Yes! Automated Systems Engineering Technology is an exciting program exposing students to robotics and preparing them for careers within industry that is continually expanding their utilization of automation.

Mechanical Design Technology allows students the opportunity to use their creative abilities in the development of product design and development.

These exciting programs, complimented by our state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, provide for a relevant education preparing you for specific career opportunities upon completion. For additional information on these programs, or others you may not have considered before, visit sait.ca.

Payin' For It!

On May 4, Michelle and I crashed the Payin’ For It session held at SAIT Polytechnic. We thought it would be a good idea to find out if any information we are providing future students has changed. Good news! The Recruitment Team has all the most up-to-date information!

This was the second Payin’ For It session and attendance was awesome. The Orpheus Theatre was filled to capacity with SAIT students, eager to learn all the different ways to pay for their education. This session was presented jointly by Student Services, Alumni and Development and The Centre for Academic Learner Services.

If you were unable to attend the session, the information can be found at sait.ca. You can start applying for student loans online in early June. If you like old fashioned paper applications, you can pick them up at Student Services. If you have questions about student loans, SAIT has a great website that covers the entire student loan process, just click here for more information.

Interested in free money? SAIT has 3.4 million dollars to give away to students each year! However, there is work involved. You have to fill out an application. Keep in mind taking 20 minutes to fill out an awards application for free money is a great return on investment. The best place to find free money is online, check out the Alumni and Development website for award opportunities.

Finally, the Skills Investment Program (SIP) provides financially disadvantaged adults with grant funding for tuition and a living allowance while they are in school. This funding is only available for full-time program that are 52 weeks or less in duration. For more information on the SIP program, visit their website as all the requirements are outlined there.

Of course, if you have any questions about funding, a great place to start is by visiting Student Services, located on the second floor of Heritage Hall. You can also get all your questions answered by calling 403.284.7248 or e-mailing advising@sait.ca.

The Seniorizer

If you have driven around Calgary over the past couple months you may have noticed SAIT’s “Get a Career You Never Want to Leave” advertisements. As part of the campaign, SAIT has also created a hilarious Facebook application.

Using one of your own photos you can “Seniorize” yourself. Add wrinkles, age spots or a bald head to your youthful face and see what Father Time has in store for you. This “geriatric makeover” is bound to have your friends commenting when you post it your facebook profile. Have fun!!

Long time, no blog

So, I will be honest. We have been lazy, lazy bloggers. To our many readers, I apologise. I pledge to not allow this to happen again.

There have been some big things happening at SAIT recently, $15 million dollars big. SAIT Polytechnic recently received the largest personal donation ever given to a community college or polytechnic in Canada. John and Cheryl Aldred presented SAIT with a $15 million gift in support of the new Trades and Technology Complex, currently under construction.

The new complex will give students in the School of Construction and School of Manufacturing and Automation state of the art facilities to learn and study in. The complex is to be completed by 2012.

Currently, our students are writing their final exams. I was taking pictures of the recruiters today and managed to snap this shot of our students in the middle of their ECON exams. Good luck to everyone!

Jason and I recently hosted an Admissions Information Session in April. This session was very well attended. We had capacity for 30 students, but ended up with over 45 students. There were a lot of questions about funding and prior learning assessments. We stayed for over an hour answering specific questions. It was awesome to see so many students with an interest in SAIT.

For those students who missed the last session, there is a funding session taking place on May 4. This Payin’ For It session will cover all aspects of students’ finance such as loans, grants, bursaries and free money. No registration is necessary, click here for more information.

On November 1, I flew to Saskatoon to attend the See Your Future event, which brought over a thousand students through the labyrinth of employers and post-secondary institutes.

After the event I was happy to spend the next couple hours in the company of the University of Alberta Augustana recruiter…thanks for the ride Lisa! Our travels landed us in Regina for the second part of the See Your Future event.

I can never convince those who have not had time to enjoy Regina that it is a wonderful city, especially when it comes to dinner options. I was excited to be able to visit two of my favorite places in Regina, La Bodega and Crave. If you ever drive through make sure you take the time to stop for some fantastic food!

After arriving home on November 4th, I went back to the office to put together some final details for the Educational Liaison Association of Alberta (ELAA) sponsored Counsellor Update in Red Deer. The update brings together counsellors and career practitioners from around Alberta. The goal is to update them on the different programs and services that are being offered at the Alberta post-secondary institutes so they can bring the information back to the students in their respective high schools.

I concentrated on the changes that have happened at SAIT such as new pre-requisites and admission updates. Check out selection criteria for more information.

After taking a couple days off to relax and get caught up on household work I spent a few days in the office getting come much needed administration work done. My next week takes me to Jasper, Hinton, Edson, Barrhead and then to the ATA conference in Banff.

This is going to be a long week! I am anticipating my much needed vacation to Hawaii! I am going to Waikiki to march with Calgary’s Avant Garde, in the Waikiki Christmas parade. Between our performances we will be participating in Germaine’s Luau, hiking the Diamond Heater Crater, touring Pearl Harbor and much more.

On top of the group activities I have also registered to go shark cage diving with Hawaii Adventures and, with a mix of anxiety and excitement, a tandem sky dive.

A Blogging Delinquent

Has it really almost been 2 months since I started? – OMG…what a blogging delinquent I have been. TONS has happened since I joined the SAIT recruitment team on September 14th!

I’ve seen much more of Alberta than I thought was possible in such a short span of time. The road’s been good to me so far though and I’ve met a lot of great people on my travels.

Here’s a list of the top 10 most memorable things I’ve experienced in my first 64 days as a SAIT Recruiter:

1. Surviving the SCARIEST (no joke) eight hour drive of my life from Grande Prairie to Calgary in the first blizzard of the fall.

2. Losing my GPS and having to learn how to read a map again;)

3. Attending SAIT’s fall Open House – what a great way to learn about all that we do here at SAIT. Don’t miss the next one, Feb. 5th and 6th!

4. Actually being able to memorize most of the programs that we offer at SAIT – with names like Medical Radiologic Technology and Object Oriented Software Developer, this is no small feat.

5. Getting to meet some pretty amazing students from all over Alberta – from Oyen to Whitecourt and everywhere in between - your sense of humor and curiosity are what makes this job so fun.

6. Going to the wrong school and showing up 5 minutes late to an event COVERED in mud on a rainy night in Drumheller, AB.

7. Volunteering with Jason for SAIT’s Family Fun Day to raise awareness about the new Trades and Technology Complex – the most memorable part being the scary, mask-wearing, whip-like ribbon brandishing, stilt walkers (who were surprisingly a HIT with the kids!)

8. Enjoying regular laughs with the hilarious bunch in my office :)

9. Visiting Nickleback’s High school in Hanna, Alberta!

10. Sitting in my hotel on Remembrance Day and realizing how lucky we all are to live in such a wonderful country where we have some pretty amazing opportunities – thanks to those who made it possible!

A slushy mess!

I always look forward to the south week of ELAA (Educational Liaison Association of Alberta) as it gives me a chance to visit with some people who used to recruit. Sometimes that is the only chance we have to reconnect besides online with Facebook, which of course can never replace face to face reunions.

Last week I had received a request from Kate Andrews High School in Coaldale to stop by for a presentation on a CALM class prior to our ELAA event on Tuesday. I guess in my haste to set this new information in my calendar I mixed up the dates and put the information in for Monday. Seeing this in my calendar I booked the hotel in Lethbridge for one more night and headed down on Sunday evening thinking my first event was Monday at 9am. I realized my error only after arriving at the school and having the teacher tell me I was a day early. All was not lost; I did go back to the hotel in Lethbridge and got some administrative work done so at least it was not a waste of a day.

My first event ended up being at the high school in Picture Butte. The event was very well organized and we saw many students not only from Picture Butte but also from surrounding areas such as County Central High School in Vulcan. The majority of the students were looking to some of our Health programs but I was happy to provide information on our Energy Asset Management program and our Broadcast Systems programs.

The students were excited to learn of our Open House on October 30 and 31 from 9 am-4 pm. With the town only being a few hours away the students were quickly making plans to get to Calgary!

On Monday evening we were at Lethbridge Collegiate High School and it was one of the best evening events I have been to in a while. I had a lineup of students waiting to ask questions about our programs and services. One of the popular services at this event was Chinook Lodge, our Aboriginal Student Centre.

Tuesday morning brought me to Kate Andrews High School in Coaldale, where I did the CALM presentation as scheduled. I was a little worried about arriving on time since there was a pretty significant snow fall over night, but the highways were in pretty good condition, just a little fog to deal with. The students seemed pretty receptive to our programs with the majority interested in the Apprenticeship Trades.

One thing we always look forward to during the South week is the lunch provided for us at Senator Gershaw in Bow Island. We were treated to roast beef, potato wedges, bean salad with all the fixings to go with it. I think I ate a little too much because I felt like a needed a nap!

Wednesday was a pretty busy day. We started at Crescent Heights High then moved to Medicine Hat High for an event. The evening event was in Dunmore at Eagle Butte and it was extremely busy for SAIT. I fielded quite a few questions about the Encana partnership.

After a few hours spent in Oyen on Thursday, I was headed home! I needed a few hours of relaxation before the hectic Friday ahead of me.

OPEN HOUSE!

Today is the first of the Fall Open House days. Excitement filled the air as I walked across campus to cover my shift at the Advising booth. There were bus loads of students being dropped off, current students bustling to class through the throngs of prospective students and staff members spending some time at their respective displays. We’ve seen tours, Smart Start presentations and many people lining up to get their “free” application in before the event is over.

For counsellors and students

I was recently asked to be part of a counsellor event held at SAIT called “Counsellor’s Update”. This event is kind of cool, as it is a chance to connect with counsellors and let them know of some of the admission changes SAIT has for the upcoming year. Check out the picture of the Student Success team at Counsellor’s Update. Upcoming events for both students and counsellors is the topic of my blog today.

As part of the event, Start Smart at SAIT was featured as a way for future students and their parents to get more information about SAIT. Start Smart at SAIT is an innovative career exploration session that will be held during Open House, taking place October 30 and 31. Topics will include: how to apply, scholarships and bursaries, residence and how to pick a program that is right for you.

Other events counsellors and students will want to visit are the information sessions, put on by our academic programs. This is an awesome way to find out exactly what the programs can do for you. Get information about job statistics, future trends and admission criteria, directly from the source. Visit our campus events page, located on sait.ca. High school students are encouraged to bring their parents. Parents always remember to ask the questions you may forget to.

Not sure about what program you are interested in? No problem. Career Counselling offers potential students career exploration services. Our own recruiters also host admission presentations, with the next one taking place on November, 19. Just e-mail recruitment@sait.ca for more information.

So you want to go to school?

Most of the time, I let the travelling recruiters post the blogs on here. However, as the “web recruiter” for SAIT, I get a lot of the same questions they do. So, in an attempt to boost readership, I too, will start contributing.

One of my great passions is post secondary. I think there is a program or a school for everyone. What is so fantastic about SAIT, is the programs are short term (mostly one or two year), but they have awesome employment opportunities attached to them.

Since SAIT will begin accepting applications for fall 2010 as of November 1, 2009, I thought this would be a great opportunity to create a Top Five Tips list for researching SAIT. So, hang on, here we go!

1) Visit the website – Wherever you decide to attend, your first step should be to visit the website. SAIT.ca will give you invaluable information about the programs and student life opportunities available. It will also save you time. You will find out exactly what we offer. 2) Attend Open House – This year, SAIT is holding two Open Houses! The first one is taking place October 30 and 31st. What is so great about this Open House, is that it is happening right before SAIT begins accepting applications for the year. The Open House is a great way to find out more about the program you are interested in. You get to ask questions and get all your information to make an informed decision.

3) Take a campus tour, sign up for Student For A Day – What I always ask students is “Would you buy a car, without test driving it?” The same goes for your education. Test drive it! SAIT offers lots of great campus tour and Student For A Day opportunities. Check them out and make an informed decision.

4) Speak to an advisor – SAIT has a lot of different ways to do this. The most common is to come in and speak to someone. Students Services offers advising at their main office on a drop-in basis, so no appointment is necessary. If you are from out of town, you can call us, e-mail us or chat with us on msn. There is no excuse why you cannot get all the information you need, in order to apply.

5) Apply early and to more than one program – Don’t wait until the end of the admissions period to apply to SAIT. Many of our programs fill up quickly, so the longer you wait, the less likely you will receive admission. Also, I encourage students to apply to more than one program. Sure, application fees are $50 each, but what if you do not gain admission? I tell students to take control, and submit multiple applications. Have Plan B and Plan C in place.

Alberta's North East - Love it!

Monday September 21 found me scrambling in the office for about an hour trying to get myself organized for my first trip of the season. I am usually a pretty organized person but the fact that I had left the week prior for a few days in Orlando, Florida left me feeling like I was forgetting something.

Once I got myself organized and got on the road I drove for eight hours to reach my first destination of Fort McMurray, AB. The drive was beautiful and thankfully uneventful but I was certainly happy to relax in the hotel with a nice meal and the season premiere of House.

We had a full day of events on Tuesday including Fort McMurray Composite, Westwood and Father Patrick Mecredi. SAIT was popular when it came to our Apprenticeship programs, Professional Cooking and Business but I was surprised by how many people were looking for Audio/Sound Engineering.

Wednesday was a relaxing day compared to the day before. After driving from Fort McMurray to Athabasca, I spent a very energetic couple of hours with the students of Edwin Parr High School. The majority of the questions I fielded were about the Trades, Business programs and about the scholarships that SAIT has available.

After the event I drove to Cold Lake, my favorite place in Alberta! I was happy to stay in the Lakeshore Inn again as it is a beautiful Bed and Breakfast right on the Lake. For dinner I went to Clark’s General Store and had the Blackened Haddock, which was fantastic, as usual.

After the Athabasca event on Wednesday I didn’t have another event until Thursday night and was able to enjoy the room at Lakeshore to the fullest. I had plenty of time to get some administrative work done and feel like I have caught up slightly.

The event on Thursday night was held at the new Cold Lake High School and was a great success. I was pretty steady all night with questions about Broadcast Systems, Information Technology and of course with the programs that are available through the Non-Commissioned Subsidy Education Plan with the Canadian Forces.

Friday took me home. The drive from Cold Lake to Calgary was wonderful. This time of year the leaves are turning and this area of Alberta is spotted with hills, valleys and lakes.

The Ghosts of Recruiters Past

Hello avid SAITale readers,

It is great to be back on the road. The adventures begin again. This past week found me in the beautiful region of the Kootenays in British Columbia. It is my opinion that this may be one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I visited many cities during this tour. One of them was Nelson, BC. If any of you are familiar with the city, you may know one of the hotels is haunted. Not urban legend haunted, actually haunted. This was confirmed by the front desk at the hotel. She told me the ghost’s name is Fred, the former owner of the hotel and he haunts room 335. To make things worse, the front desk told me children refuse to stay in this room. Spooky, huh?!

All this information was too much for me to deny the vibes I felt in the hotel. I promptly grabbed my bags and headed to the Best Western. Although fellow recruiters made fun of me the entire trip, I’m happy to report I had a terrific and terror free sleep that evening.

There are lots of things to think about when starting a new job and preparing for my first day at SAIT was no different. My name is Sarah Kelman and I’ve officially survived my first week as SAIT’s newest Student Recruiter. Almost. It’s only Thursday afternoon so time will tell :)

Actually, it’s been a really fun week and I’ve already learned a LOT about SAIT. This will be my second year of recruiting for post-secondary but my first working at a Polytechnic. I’m already noticing so many differences in programs and interests but one thing remains the same – I see how excited students are to be at school because they are pursuing subjects and careers that they love.

I’m so looking forward to getting out onto the road again this fall – it’s always a blast meeting fresh faces and exploring all the interesting places we get to travel to. Can't wait to see you out there!

Long Time, No See

Wow, time has passed quickly. I can’t believe I haven’t written since the Raggae Festival. So much has happened since and I will try to cover it all without boring you to tears.

At the end of August we attended Expo Latino. This event was a dry one for us last year but what a difference the location of our booth can make. We saw almost quadruple the amount of people at our booth then we did last year. I very much enjoyed watching the dancing that happened spontaneously throughout the festival, there is nothing better than to watch really good dancers’ dance.

From September 1-7 SAIT hosted the Competitors of WorldSkills in our on campus residence. It was so much fun having people from all over the world visit us for that week. We also set up a booth in the Information Tent down at the Stampede Grounds and enjoyed answering questions from prospective student s and the general public. The energy and excitement that World Skills brought to Calgary was fantastic and I’m happy to say I was a part of it.

During that same week, SAIT unveiled the new TTC Complex due to be completed in 2012. Talk about exciting! The architecture is phenomenal and really has that “wow” factor. I can’t wait to see it all completed and I am excited to see what the future holds for our students and our community.

We welcomed our newest Student Recruitment Officer, Sarah Kelman on Monday. Sarah has extensive experience in post-secondary recruitment so we are sure she will bring a lot of new ideas and some great energy to our team. With the addition of a new team member, we are hoping to kick up our attendance at events a notch.

I am getting geared up to head out on my first recruitment trip of the season. I will be heading to Fort McMurray, Athabasca and Cold Lake on Monday September 21.

In the meantime, on a personal note, I am heading to Orlando FL on September 17 to participate in a Professional Development opportunity that will teach me new tricks to help with my participation in my only outside activity, Winterguard. What I am most excited about is the Friday night movement class that is being taught by Mia Michaels, from So You Think You Can Dance! I will be sure to post some pictures in my next BLOG. Wish me luck!

Back to school

It’s hard to believe the summer is coming to an end, already. I know! Don’t say it out loud. As the students head back to class, the truth is hard to ignore. However, this means it’s the start of another exciting recruitment season.

Michelle and I will be hitting the road very shortly to begin helping students get all the important information they need to make their post-secondary decision. We understand this is a big life decision. We are excited to help you with this decision.

We are traveling all over Western Canada and look forward to answering your questions. We’ll be visiting hundreds of high school, many Education and Career Fairs and you’ll probably see us taking a coffee break at every Tim Horton’s along the way! August 15 brought some fantastic entertainment to Calgary by way of the Reggae Festival. The SAIT Recruitment Officers were happy to attend the event and answer questions on

programming SAIT offers. The event started off slowly as it was a pretty chilly day. The sun came out for a short time in the afternoon but our appeal was nothing compared to the musical talents of the entertainment.

A huge thank you to Meaghan and Deborah! We certainly appreciated your help!

Our next summer festival is the Expo Latino on Princes’ Island Park. We will have our table open to the public on Friday August 28 from 6 pm to 10 pm; Saturday August 29 and Sunday August 30 from 11 am to 7 pm.

Marda Gras!

Thanks to the help of some of SAIT’s Student Services staff, SAIT was able to attend the much loved Marda Gras Festival on Sunday August 9th.

I have to admit that I love attending these events on SAIT’s behalf. Who can complain about spending a couple hours outside, listening to some fantastic music, spending some time wandering through the many vendors and most importantly, chatting with all the people who are interested in SAIT’s programs.

This weekend we fielded many questions about what programs may still be available for the Fall and the Skills Investment Program.

A huge thank you to Tim, Karin and Jay for coming out to the event, we couldn’t have done it without you.

Calgary Folk Festival

This past weekend SAIT participated with a booth at the Calgary Folk Festival.

Saturday’s weather was amazing. The sun shone, the rain stayed away. I was lucky enough to have the company of Lorna and Walter from SAIT’s Student Services office! On Sunday, Jason, Trenton and Michael saw a little rain but it didn’t dampen the mood at the Festival.

We spoke with people who were interested in our Continuing Education programs as well as some that were wondering which full-time programs still had availability for this fall.

Sometimes at these events, even we seasoned recruiters learn something new. There was interest in our Marine Electronics, which I was unaware we offered! Which leads me into some great news. The Student Recruitment Officers will be soon sporting some new equipment. In order to ensure we have the most updated information at our fingertips, we will now have access to Notebooks and internet sticks so we can access SAIT’s website at all times.

All in all, we had a great weekend listening so some great music, eating some fantastic food and meeting some wonderful people.

Calgary’s Folk Music Festival 2009

The summer festivals have been a lot of fun. We have enjoyed talking to many, many of you at these events. Last weekend was the Sun and Salsa Event in Kensington. The beautiful weather brought many of you out to enjoy the sunshine. It also allowed us the opportunity to speak to many people interested in everything from Business Intelligence: Data Analysis to Administrative Information Management.

Summer of 2009

The summer excitement continues! The SAIT momentum “stampedes” on throughout the summer months. The Lilac Festival was a terrific success. Michelle and I had the opportunity to talk to many Calgarians and visitors at the event. The beautiful weather made the festival a great way to kick off the summer season. It was great meeting and talking with many people interested in attending SAIT in the fall, or going back to school in one of our Continuing Education courses.

The ATB Golf Tournament took place last week. The recruiters were located on Stephen Avenue with our Robotic Arm that putts golf balls better than I ever could. Representatives from the Automated Systems Engineering Technology program were on hand to answer questions about our excellent robotics program.

Back on campus, the Student Services department has also completed another busy Apprenticeship Registration week. The entire department made this our top priority. Thanks to everyone’s hard work and commitment, it was a great success.

Reconnecting through art

The Student Recruitment Team and the Student Success Team got together this past Thursday to express our inner children, while also building our connections as a team.

As a team builder we headed down to the Fire Escape for an evening of potluck and paint. Each of us purchased our own pottery. We then drew names and painted the piece of the person we drew. We had a great time trying to figure out just the best way to design and paint our masterpieces. The staff at the Fire Escape were fantastic and helped to make our experience that much better.

One of the many great things about working at SAIT is the fun and energetic group of people I get to share an office with. This event was just one more way that we could connect, catch up on real life and express ourselves.

Congratulations to SAIT’s Graduates!

On June 1st and 2nd we proudly watched over 1100 graduates from the many SAIT programs cross the stage to receive their credentials. With much pomp and circumstance, the institute honored the graduates and celebrated with their family and friends.

Once a student has graduated, SAIT does not cut all ties, we like to keep in touch through the Alumni and Development Office where there are many services offered.

Canadian Forces Subsidized Education Plan

On May 26th, 2009 I had the pleasure of sailing aboard the HMCS Regina out of CFB Esquimalt BC. The sail was a way for the Canadian Military to inform members of the Universities, Technical Institutes and Colleges of the fantastic opportunities that the Military offers in the form of Educational Subsidies. It is my job now to tell the public that I come into contact with about how the Canadian Military, specifically the Navy, can make a difference in your life.

I’ll tell you about the adventure then I will get into specifics about the program itself.

We left the harbor in Victoria aboard the HMSC Regina around 9 am. Before leaving dock the crew lined us up and had us cheer “Rider Pride” before they pushed off. The Frigit itself was decked out in all sorts of Roughriders banners and Saskatchewan signs. Just across from us on the dock was the HMSC Calgary and of course we could see the Stampeder’s Horse symbols all over the place.

Once we hit the waterway the crew got right down to business by providing tours of the entire vessel. We saw everything from the communications deck, missiles and torpedoes, living quarters, showers, and mess halls. An explanation was given about how the entire Frigit was designed to provide quiet and safe passage; they even had the crew perform high speed maneuvers to show us what the vessel was capable of!

I could go on forever as the how well we were treated, how exciting the entire experience was and how I will remember it for the rest of my life, but I want to ensure I have space to talk about the program itself.

What is this Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Education Plan?

The Canadian Forces (CF) offers an entry program to provide college education and a salary for specific occupations. Selected applicants will receive the full cost of tuition, associated fees, books, and instruments. Starting salary is $31,020 with increases every year ($37,932 in 2nd year, $45,552 in 3rd year).

While studying, students receive the same benefits as other members of the CF including, annual leave, medical and dental benefits. It is also possible for students to join the subsidized education program while in their first or second year of studies. Graduates typically serve two months for each month of academic funding beginning on the date of college graduation.

This program is competitive and a limited number of applicants will be selected. A person can apply through the nearest Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre or Detachment or online at FORCES.CA

Eligibility: enroll in the CF into one of the professions listed below (NCM-SEP); provide proof of unconditional acceptance into an approved post-secondary institute and program applicable to the occupation; successfully complete Basic Military Qualification Training either before starting the full-time academic program or, in the event of conflicting schedules, after the completion of the first year.

The following is a list of programs that SAIT Polytechnic offers that are eligible for full subsidy with the CF. Underneath the program that SAIT offers is the specific job list that it transfers to with the Military:

Hello Everyone,

I’m back from holidays and excited for the beginning of the summer recruitment season. We have a lot of exciting events planned throughout Calgary. When you see the SAIT logo at a summer event, make sure you stop by to talk to Michelle or myself. Not only do we have great information about SAIT to share, but also some pretty sweet Frisbees (yep, they’re free)!

This Sunday you can find us at the Lilac Festival in Mission. We’ll be on-site from 10:00am-6:00pm. Hopefully with this terrific weather you’ll have time to check out this exciting event.

Skill Testing Questions

Besides the graduation preparations I had the privilege of attending the 2009 Provincial Skills Competition in Edmonton this past week. It was not only a pleasure being able to chat with people who found the trade/technologies fascinating and were interested in possibly attending SAIT but it was also exciting to be able to watch our SAIT students in action.

Even more exciting is that Calgary will be hosting the 40th WorldSkills Competition from September 1-7th, 2009. For more information on the registrants, schedule and so much more please check out the WorldSkills 2009 website.

No, SAIT is not coming out with a line of automobiles (although it is interesting idea). The “test drive” I’m talking about is the Student for a Day program. This free service provides you the opportunity to sit in on classes, talk to instructors and speak with current students about the program that interests you!

Deciding what direction to take your future can be difficult. With the cost of tuition, the investment of your time and the impact this will have on your life, it is important you make the right choice. This program significantly helps you in making that decision.

You wouldn’t buy a car without taking it for a test drive, so please take advantage of this exciting opportunity to see if SAIT is the place to “further your passion”.

Hello Everyone,

The recruiters have finally returned home. This is the first week in ages both Michelle and myself have been in the office together. We are hard at work planning for the next recruitment season.

In addition to our planning, we have had the opportunity to visit many prospective students in CALM classes throughout the city. Thank you to Forest Lawn High School and Central Memorial High School for welcoming us into your schools.

Upcoming presentations will take us to Bert Church High School and George MacDougall High School. Hopefully we will see some of you there.

The Adventures of a Cursed Recruiter

It is with hesitation that I give this blog the above title. I do not wish to jinx myself for the remainder of my career as a recruiter. So despite the details of today, I am confident that the remainder of my travels will be problem-free!

For those of you who have kept up with my travels, the mishaps continued today. As I returned to my vehicle after a full day of CALM presentations at Strathmore High School (a wonderful school, by the way), my car would not start. Sadly, due to the freezing temperatures of -30°, my battery was dead.

Not knowing anyone in the lovely town of Strathmore, I was forced to call a tow truck for assistance. The gentlemen kindly, for a fee of $65, assisted me in boosting my car. At no extra cost, he offered the following advice…invest in CAA!

Beautiful and Cold!

Hello Everyone,

This blog is coming to you from the Rotary Career Symposium in the beautifully frigid city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. I am grateful for a hotel that connects to the Convention Centre to avoid the -35 degree weather.

This is my first visit to the friendly city. It has been great meeting the people and students of Winnipeg. They were a great host and the restaurants were also enjoyable.

How Time Flies!

Where to start? I have done so much this new year already so I guess I will just start at the beginning.

February brought with it some sad news for us with Allison’s departure but she has moved into something that sounds exciting and I wish her the best! Looks like we have the potential of hiring a new recruiter.

SAIT held it’s popular Open House February 1 and 2. The event was a huge success bringing prospective students in from all over including four busses from Medicine Hat, Dunmore, Foremost and Bow Island!

The following weeks brought me to many CALM classes in and around the City, which I always enjoy as a nice little break away from the office and it’s always fun to speak with the students in Grade 11 since this is generally the time that they start getting serious about their future.

At the end of February, I took some time off to head to Nashville with my Winterguard group, Encorps, to compete in the Winterguard International Regional contest and I had a fantastic time.

I also recently visited the Rotary Career and Education Fair in Brandon, MB. SAIT was well received at the 3 day event with many questions revolving around the School of Health and Public Safety.

I am currently in Red Deer, visiting Hunting Hills High School and they have been fantastic! Next week I am off to Las Vegas to take advantage of some more time off.

Adventures in Northern British Columbia

On Sunday, February 22, 2009, I began my lengthy journey to Northern British Columbia. It quickly became one of the most memorable recruitment weeks of my short career. The decision to drive the extended distance was not among the greatest recruitment decisions ever made. However, the addition of a terrific side-kick and co-pilot, Melissa, a fellow recruiter, certainly salvaged the week.

Together we set off on the eleven hour journey to Dawson Creek, BC (and no, I did not see Pacey or Jen. You all must stop asking. It’s not funny anymore). Along the journey, Melissa and I enjoyed the rockin’ beats of our iPods, and bonded over Starbucks coffees, our love of recruiting and maybe a broken heart or two. The distance felt as though it was cut in half due to the terrific conversation and company.

The week began with great events in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John. Next we visited Hudson’s Hope, which is indeed a real place, not the fictional location of a night-time soap opera.

The adventures did not really begin until half way through the week. At the Chetwynd Subway, I had the unfortunate pleasure of forgetting my wallet. Three-hours later in Prince George, I finally realized my wallet was M.I.A. Not dedicated enough to make the six-hour return trip, I called Subway to see if it was still there. To my surprise and relief, it was! The staff was very helpful, agreeing to return it to me as soon as possible. Thank you to the Subway in Chetwynd for your help!

After a few more events in Tumbler Ridge, Prince George, Quesnel and McBride, Melissa and I began the journey home. Excited to make it back home, we both set off on Highway 1 toward Edmonton. Along the way we noticed a very troubling sign reading, “Please Check Fuel – 100 km to the next station”.
After checking our fuel gauge, and letting out a shriek of terror, I informed Melissa we were about a hair off the very bottom line. Adding to our pain was the lack of cell service driving through the beautiful, but problematic mountainous region of BC.

After some debate, we set off to see just how far a vehicle is able to travel on empty. To our shock, happiness and gratitude, our gas-guzzling SUV managed to roll into Jasper on fumes. The adventure was over, we had survived, and learned an important lesson all recruiters should already know (keep an eye on your freakin’ gas gauge). The tank of fuel lasted us the rest of the journey, allowing us to make it home safe and sound.

Overall, the trip was a lot of fun. We ate at some terrific restaurants, got to know a few other ELAA members we didn’t know very well. You’ll all be pleased to know my wallet was returned on Monday, with all my cards and cash still intact.

From Kamloops to Kelowna and beyond!

This week I find myself in the beautiful area of Kamloops and Kelowna in British Columbia. The trip was off to a terrific start. I got to fly over the majestic Rocky Mountains. The scenery was amazing and the weather was awesome!

SAIT is participating in the Education and Career Fairs taking place in each of these communities. The Kamloops and Kelowna events have been well attended, with strong interest from prospective students. At each event I was also approached by several alumni. It was nice to hear from each of them. They all had positive things to say about their time at SAIT, and the careers they went on to pursue.

Upon my arrival I changed my Facebook status to “Jason is in Kamloops”. To my surprise I received a message the following day from a high school friend I haven’t seen in years. We were able to get together to catch up on the past several years of our lives. Thanks Facebook!

I also caught up with Recruiters from other institutions. We get close while traveling throughout Alberta in the fall. I haven’t seen many of them in several months. We were able to grab lunch together one day, as well as hit a great sushi place in Kelowna on Thursday.

Where has the time gone?

It seems like just yesterday that I was braving the cold in Edmonton wearing my Christmas sweater but that was over a month ago! What have I been up to? After enjoying a restful holiday I returned to the hustle of SAIT’s winter orientation. This was a great event for students beginning our January (winter) intake. These programs include:

We were excited to welcome these students to campus.

After Orientation our focus is now towards our upcoming Open House which is taking place on February 6 and 7. These two action packed days are full of scheduled activities to help you explore potential career opportunities. Activities include tours, hands on exhibits, demonstrations and the opportunity to speak with instructors and students.

I encourage both confirmed and potential students to attend Open House as it is the best opportunity to learn everything there is to know about SAIT.

Cold Snap!

My latest blog comes to you from SAIT’s Calgary Connections office in Edmonton (10304 Jasper Avenue NW). I have traveled to the great north, braving the worst cold snap of the year, to offer academic advising and program information to Edmontonians. At a balmy -40°C, I’ve spent the journey thinking of all the wonderful things about living in this great country. As my body thawed from the brief walk to the office this morning, I realized there are far more benefits, so I’ve officially stopped complaining about the weather (at least until I go back outside).
Many people are not aware that we have an office in Edmonton to provide students with information and assistance in finding answers to their questions. The office also offers academic advising and assistance on selected dates (see below for upcoming sessions).

My last ELAA week for the year!

It was with mixed emotions I finished this past Edmonton recruiting week. It was my last ELAA week for another season and due to the fact that a lot of schools hire recruiters on contract it will be the last time I get to see many of these people. I cannot believe how quickly this season went by, many great memories and friends were made along the way!

For our final event we all wore Christmas Sweaters, as you can see we were looking very good!

Students didn’t seem to think that our sweaters were funny; I think they thought we were serious!!

It is back in the office for me this week. Jason is in Edmonton and Michelle is doing the final ELAA week in Medicine Hat and area. I wish everyone safe travels on these wintery roads.

It has been a while since I have had a chance to write for the BLOG. So many things have happened since I last wrote.

In early December, I flew to Abbottsford, BC to attend a large Career and Education Fair. SAIT is pretty popular in this BC town. I spoke with over 120 prospective students!

After the event, I had to hustle to the airport and catch a flight to Victoria. I was traveling with a recruiter from Alberta College of Art and Design and we had booked a flight together. When we arrived at the airport, we discovered the airline had gone out of business months earlier! After many frantic phone calls we were on our way.

We ended up driving to Vancouver and flying out with Air Canada a couple hours later. I had a pleasant surprise when I found out my travel companion had an Elite membership so we were able to relax in the airlines private lounge.

Victoria’s career fair was a little quieter for SAIT but still an overall success. Quite a few inquiries about the Paramedic program and other health careers.

The best thing about Victoria is the accommodations! We had an awesome deal at The Empress so I got to relax there for three nights. I spent loads of money shopping while I was visiting Victoria.

I got home from BC on December 5th. I had a short visit with my husband then took off for Whitehorse, YK.

The weather was incredible! The amount of snow on the ground was amazing and I thouroughly enjoyed my time in the Yukon. SAIT was surprisingly popular, with over 120 prospective students coming by to visit.

Next week I will be on the road for the last week of ELAA. It is an exciting time, since it means Christmas is close. It is also makes me a little melancholy. In a job like this, you spend more time with recruiters from other institutions then you do with your own co-workers in the office. The thought of not seeing many of them until February makes me a little sad.

A Return to Calgary!

With the Alberta recruitment circuit returning to Calgary, I was pleased to find out I would be able to sleep in my own bed, see my roommate and have the opportunity to speak with Calgary students this week. The week began by attending some great post-secondary event s at several high schools throughout Calgary and Cochrane. Working with Allison at several of the events, we continued to stress the importance of applying early at sait.ca. The introduction of continuous selection for several of our competitive programs means applying early is now important for individuals interested in both our competitive and non-competitive programs.
The second half of the week was very different. The 31st Annual Alberta Liaison Association of Alberta Conference for Counsellors was held in Banff, so I headed to the mountains with the rest of the SAIT Polytechnic team. Michelle, Allison and myself had the opportunity speak with counsellors throughout the province, and I even met a couple from Yellowknife. The three days in Banff also allowed the opportunity to bond with my new co-workers and recruiters from other schools. Today it was back to Calgary to prepare for my week in Central Alberta.

What do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

Thursday afternoon, after presenting to some students at Crescent Heights High School, I loaded my rental car and started my journey to Edmonton for the Canada Career Week event at the Agricom. I was happy to see we didn’t have snow, but my happiness was soon replaced by anxiety when I passed Red Deer and had to white-knuckle the rest of the drive due to an angry wind. I’m pretty sure my car was lifted off the highway a few times!

I made it to Edmonton around the same time my hands got numb so it was perfect timing. Lucky for me, I got to stay at my favorite Edmonton hotel, The Varscona, and I ate at one of my favorite restaurants, Dadeo on Whyte Ave. The Po’Boys are to die for!

Friday morning brought me to the Agricom for the event. I arrived late on Thursday night and had to wait until Friday morning to set up. I had a super long walk with all my materials and after spilling the contents of my Rubbermaid bin at least twice, two exhibitors came to my rescue and helped me the rest of the way. Thank you to the recruiters from Jacob and Manpower,you deserve a Starbucks gift card!

The event itself started off pretty slowly but by 11 am the place was packed. I spoke to over 150 prospective students, many of whom came from the Edmonton area high schools.

While most people would not be happy about spending Friday night in a hotel room waiting to go to work on Saturday, I was happy about it as I was able to catch up with some friends over dinner. Due to being a recruiter, I always have some friends I can catch up with, almost everywhere I go.

Saturday was a little slower but still went well. I spoke with about 100 people, mainly those interested in our Distance Education classes.

After the event, I aimed the car South and took off for home. All in all, the two days went by quickly and we certainly did get some great publicity in Edmonton.

Next week Jason, Allison and I head for Banff for the 31st Annual Conference for Counsellors.

I’m back!
I just returned from my Mexican vacation and within 14 hours of being home, I was back on the road recruiting! This week I was in western Alberta traveling to Grande Cache. I was not at all prepared for the weather, when we stopped at the Columbia Ice Fields I was still wearing my flip flops!
I was very happy to stay at one of my favourite hotels, Jasper’s Park Place Inn. I even got to stay in my favourite room there.
The roads through Jasper National Park were full of animals it was crazy, especially when we were leaving early in the morning.
Next week I will be in Saskatchewan, traveling to Weyburn and Estevan. To be honest, I didn’t know where those places were until I looked them up on a map. Thank goodness for Google maps!

Road Trippin’ to Edmonton

This week was my very first on the road with the SAIT Recruitment Team. Michelle and I headed to Edmonton early Monday morning for a busy and exciting week. I was grateful to have the terrific company for the journey. I was even more grateful for Michelle’s keen sense of direction and ability to manoeuvre Edmonton’s terrifying traffic circles.

Our Edmonton tour included a total of ten high schools. We enjoyed speaking to many students interested in our programs. However, we spent most of our time informing students that we were, in fact, different than NAIT.

As recruiters, we also double as tourists in the cities we visit. Michelle introduced me to some of her favourite restaurants and shops. We even had the opportunity to visit the West Edmonton Mall. There were a couple birthdays on the road. A fellow recruiter and I had birthdays that fell on Thursday and Friday. One evening we celebrated the dual birthdays with several new friends we’d made on the road.

As Michelle and I headed home on Friday I received my first birthday gift. Unaware of the speed limit, I was handed a shiny new speeding ticket. It was a good lesson to learn as I begin my recruitment career.

But I must get going. I’m off to North Battleford, Saskatchewan in a few hours.

Extreme Recruitment

This week brought me to the first ELAA (Educational Liaison Association of Alberta) week in Calgary. That meant 11 events in 4 days!

We visited James Fowler, John Diefenbaker, St. Francis, St. Gabriels and Chestermere High School, Notre Dame, Bishop McNally, Lester Pearson, Bert Church, Crescent Heights and Master’s Academy.

The biggest questions we fielded were on the much anticipated OccuPassion event on SAIT’s main campus, November 18 from 4:30 to 8:30 pm.

I was happy to have a couple people join me from our School of Business and the School of Manufacturing and Automation as we saw over 1000 students in the 4 days and the extra help was needed. I was also happy to have Jason with me on Thursday and Friday. Jason is the newest member of the Recruitment team at SAIT and you will be hearing more from him in the days to come.

Jason and I head off to Edmonton on Monday and look forward to the opportunity to visit the students at 11 of the high schools in the area.

The glamorous life

This has been one of the craziest weeks of recruitment I have ever experienced. In the past five days we had:

- A car catch fire
- Speeding ticket(s)
- Parking tickets
- Flat tires
- Performance anxiety
- Car thefts

The strangest event of the week happened when a fast food outlet called the police because they thought our recruitment displays were actually weapons. After explaining to the police they were just our displays, everybody had a big laugh.

This was my first time in the Grande Prairie area. I visited high schools in Whitecourt, Slave Lake, Valleyview, High Prairie, Donnelly and Fairview. The students in this area were great and really interested in the kind of programs SAIT offers.

While in Fairview, I visited one of the cutest restaurants. Grassroots Bistro was absolutely amazing and by far the best food I ate this whole week. If you are ever in the area check it out, it was so worth it.

While in Grande Prairie I had a chance to try a Grapple. It looks like an apple, but tastes like a grape. To be honest it tasted like an apple that had soaked in grape juice for a few months and was kind of gross.

I drove all night!

I left for Prince Albert, SK on early Sunday morning as I knew I had a long drive ahead of me. Nine hours in a car, left with your thoughts is not always for the best, but I survived and the drive was a very pretty one. Thankfully my rental had Sirius Satellite and I found a great station called Big 80’s and had fun reconnecting with some old favorites.

Mon Oct 6 – I drove to Tisdale this morning to attend their career fair. I spoke with 12 interested students and had a very deep conversation about hockey with some of the locals.

Tues Oct 7 – Woke up this morning to some mean wind! It sounds like people screaming! Very creepy. Nipawin is a cute little town that is into fishing and hunting. I spent the lunch hour at the high school and was lucky to meet with students about SAIT and all the great stuff in Calgary.

Wed Oct 8 - Today brought me to Carrot River. The students attended sessions from the universities and technical schools from Saskatchewan, then strolled into the hallway to chat with me at my booth. They were excited to hear about our “Chat with a Recruiter Live” opportunity. Visit furtheryourpassion.ca for more information!

Thurs Oct 9 – Anyone who knows me knows that I am not spontaneous. Last night, I thought I might make it all the way home without staying the night anywhere. By the time I drove into Kindersley, SK I was exhausted. I hadn't booked a hotel because I was being "spontaneous" and of course, every hotel, motel and bed and breakfast was booked. I decided to keep going, but I was so tired. Singing loudly really helps! I came across the Super 8 in Hanna and was greeted with a large vacancy sign.

This weeks observations:
- 1989 kms is a long time to be in a vehicle by yourself;
- The speed limit in Saskatchewan is 100, not 110;
- I saw 11 skunks in 4 days, but have yet to see a live one;
- Sirius 8 is the best station ever!

The Tundra of Northern Alberta

Sunday started off beautifully. I left Calgary around 9 am as I had to be in Fort McMurray early Monday morning. The drive was fantastic, as all the trees were changing colour.

We stopped in St. Paul to visit one of our favorite pizza places, UFO Pizza. In St Paul, everything is about UFO’s. After filling up our bellies, we were back on the road.
While driving to Fort McMurray, I saw my first black bear and it was huge!

Mon September 29 – Today was a whirlwind of activity. We had events at all three Fort McMurray high schools. They were busy events for SAIT and I had spoke with over 400 students about SAIT programs. Thank you to the event host at Fort McMurray Composite High School, we loved the treat bags!

Tuesday September 30 – Our first event was in Boyle, AB so we had a 3 hour drive out of Fort McMurray. From Boyle we drove to Lac La Biche where we would be spending the night. My travelling friends have developed an ear for show tunes! I had to listen to them all week.

Wednesday October 1 – I am visiting my favorite place in Albera, Cold Lake/Grande Centre! This has to be one of the prettiest places in the province. It is located right on the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan. I answered questions about Radio, Television and Broadcast News and a lot of apprenticeship programs.

Thursday Oct 2 – So sad to leave Cold Lake, however we are heading to Bonnyville and then back to St. Paul. The highway south to these towns is absolutely stunning.

Friday Oct 3 – Arrived back in Calgary around 5 pm. Now, I get to unpack, do laundry and repack for my trip to Tisdale, SK on Sunday. In total, I drove 2103 km in five days!

I can’t believe the first week of our recruitment cycle is already over! It started off with the annual Professional Development Conference, hosted at Panorama, in beautiful British Columbia. From there, we headed into the Kootenay region traveling over 1500 kms and visiting eight schools.

It is always so rewarding to see the interest and excitement high school students express about SAIT. With the hospitality industry being popular in this region, I had a lot of interest in Professional Cooking, Baking and Pastry Arts and Hospitality Management.

During the trip, I was lucky enough to stay in some great places, such The Kicking Horse in Golden. I also had some delicious food at Fusion, located in scenic Nelson.

Traveling through the Kootenays during the fall is absolutely beautiful. However, we always had to watch for wildlife. I was fortunate to see deer, coyote, moose and bighorn sheep. On our way into Castlegar we were lucky enough to see two brown cubs hanging in a tree. You would never think to look for wildlife in a tree top!

And we’re off!

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending our annual professional development conference in Panorama, British Columbia. The location was absolutely beautiful and the staff was wonderful.

This conference was held through the Educational Liaison Association of Alberta (ELAA) and is the only professional development available to recruiters in Alberta.

We enjoyed sessions including: Survival on the Road; Presentation Styles, a humourous activity-filled session facilitated by Joel Hilchey; and Recruitment and Marketing to Today’s Students facilitated by Jane Bishop from Noel-Levitz.

This was ELAA’s Seventh Annual Professional Development and I have been lucky enough to attend them all. I can say this was one of our best!

Although the weekend was packed with sessions, we still had a chance to catch up with veteran recruiters and get to know new ones. These people are our true co-workers during the recruitment season and many of them become life-long friends.

This weekend gave us a chance to get hyped for the season ahead; and it will be a long on, but we have been reminded how important our roles can be with the future of those students we have a chance to speak with along our journey.

I am now in the process of finalizing hotels and rental vehicles for my trip into the beautiful landscapes of North Eastern Alberta...watch for pictures and stories in October.

First Day of School

Orientation was a huge success as we welcomed new and returning students. The two day event is a fantastic introduction to the SAIT experience. The event provides valuable information about SAIT services that will help students start off on the right track.

Students who attend orientation:

• Have higher grade point averages than those who don’t attend;
• Are more confident about accessing help on campus;
• Are more prepared to deal with the academic demands of post-secondary education;
• Feel more connected to the SAIT community.

These are all great reasons to attend Orientation, not to mention the free food and pad folios!

Fièvre Latine!!

I was lucky enough to spend the weekend at Calgary’s hottest music festival Expo Latino held at Prince’s Island Park.

The three day event featured live bands, dancing, food and an art market. I took advantage of it all, especially the great food! Thousands came out to enjoy the event and many of them were interested in SAIT.

With school starting next week, most people were interested in learning about next year's admission criteria. However, there are still programs with seats available for this year and I encourage anyone who may be interested to apply.

The SAIT boomerangs were a huge hit. Adults, children and dogs seemed very happy to get one!
Our summer recruitment initiatives are winding down and we are gearing up to hit the road for our regular recruitment tour. We will continue to post our upcoming events on this site and are looking forward to meeting future SAIT graduates!

Lightening, heavy rain and crazy windstorms, these were the challenges of my recruiting adventures, which took place July 26 and 27.

I was lucky enough to get to attend Calgary Folk Fest for free, as I was manning the SAIT booth. It is an awesome event! I would encourage anyone to check it out next year. Setting up my booth was a unexpected challenge. I quickly learned that one recruiter cannot set up the giant SAIT tent by themselves. Thankfully, my friendly booth neighbours helped me. More about the SAIT tent later.

We had a fantastic location, right in front of the Ship and Anchor Stage, so we had prime seats for the acts that appeared all weekend. Amanda, Tim and Janice, all from Customer Services, joined me at the event. Sadly, I had to leave before Blue Rodeo performed as I had to set up for a friend’s wedding.

On Sunday, there was a terrifying lightening storm. It was so bad, the festival was briefly shut down. During the heavy rainstorm, the SAIT tent became a very popular destination as people ran for cover.

It was a great weekend. I answered a lot of questions about SAIT and I saw some great bands perform live.

On August 9 we joined the celebration of African culture by attending Calgary’s Afrikadey. This event has great music, dance, cuisine and art. Lara, from our Program and Employment Advising Centre, joined me at the booth. We both ended up buying way too many dresses from one of the vendors at the event.

We then visited Marda Gras, in Marda Loop on August 10th and set up a booth there. The day was extremely windy. Thank goodness for my homemade sand bags, as they kept the tent from flying away. We were very lucky again, as our booth was set up close to one of the stages, so we saw some awesome bands and amazing dancing during our time there.

Amanda, from the Customer Care Centre joined me, which I was very thankful for, as we were inundated with questions about SAIT’s programs and services. All too soon, the weekend was over.

A huge thank you to all the members of Customer Services who helped us out during our summer adventures!

A Visit to the Windy City

I just got back from attending the Noel Levitz Conference, which took place in beautiful Chicago, Illinois. The conference focuses on student recruitment and retention. There were over 1500 in attendance from all over Canada and the United States.

I attended sessions focused on e-recruitment and enrolment management systems. There was a fantastic presentation on new students and their use of technology. I also participated in three amazing speaker sessions, facilitated by leaders in the industry. It was a great opportunity to network with people who knew so much about these topics, I even met someone who knew my father, it’s a small world!

Being this was my first time in Chicago I had some serious sightseeing to do. During my free time I went on a boat tour, a trip to the top of the Sears tower and visited the Art Institute of Chicago. I also ate at Topolobampo, which is owned by award-winning chef Rick Bayless.

As soon as I returned from Chicago I set up an information booth for two days at Marlborough Mall. With the help my co-workers, we met with over 100 prospective students interested in SAIT. We are hoping for a return visit, so keep checking sait.ca for upcoming events.

No Lazy Hazy Days of Summer for the Recruitment Team…and their many helpers!

What can I say about last week? Many hours were spent at Westerner Days , in sunny Red Deer, Alberta. I was there promoting SAIT’s full-time, Apprenticeship, Continuing and Distance Education programs. The booth was open to the public Wednesday – Sunday from noon until 10 p.m. so I was very happy to have the help of Sandra Vogel and Tim Fountain, from SAIT’s Customer Services Department.

Although Westerner Days is a trimmed down version of the Calgary Stampede, there was a steady stream of people parading through the market on a daily basis and our best business came when it would rain. When people are cold and wet they need someone to talk to and we were happy to oblige! We had a great time handing out boomerangs to the young kids and the young at heart.

On Sunday, we ventured down to Kensington’s Sun and Salsa Festival. Kevin Olenick and Robert McCallum, also of Customer Services, met with over 260 festival dwellers looking for information between imbibing on nachos and salsa and purchasing jewellery, clothing or unique gifts from the many vendors lines up along 10 Street and Kensington Road.

We were very excited to unveil our newest recruitment equipment…our summer tent! I’m sure Kevin and Robert were happy to have a retreat from the hot sun.

Wednesday brought SAIT to the Old Sun Community College Career Fair, held in conjunction with the Siksika Youth Awareness Week. Siksika Nation is nestled in the small, pretty community of Gleichen, one hour east of Calgary. I enjoyed a quiet drive there and had fun answering questions from some eager high school students. Best of all, they fed us like royalty. A huge thank you to the Siksika community for the excellent event!

Nearing the end of the Calgary Stampede.

What a week! The city and our campus have been abuzz with Stampede activity for the past week. Everywhere you look you see wranglers, cowboy boots and straw hats all supporting the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

The kickoff to the Calgary Stampede is the world famous Stampede Parade. This parade runs over 2 hours and winds its way through 4.5 kilometers of the city’s downtown core. With a draw of over 350 000 people lining the streets to watch, you can bet you will find SAIT staff everywhere. Each year the campus closes its doors for a few hours to allow for staff to attend the parade with their families and friends.

This year, I even marched in the parade with a local adult drum corps.

SAIT’s involvement in this event has increased over the last few years, most notably with the Friends of SAIT Chuckwagon. SAIT’s Chuckwagon team supports three students who demonstrate financial need with a $5,000 bursary!

During each of the ten days of Stampede, the SAIT Chuckwagon team is participating in activities around the city. Each morning brings a round of pancakes and bacon served up at Rope Square (aka Olympic Plaza). You will also find volunteers from the SAIT community cooking and greeting the public at the breakfast.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to volunteer on Monday morning. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet Calgarians and visitors from all over the world. When I returned to the office I brought with me the odour of bacon but I had a great time and will be looking forward to volunteering again next year.

Our Chuckwagon Team also hosts a nightly hoedown to honour our Sponsors. In the heart of the action guests meet for a barbeque and are able to meet our driver Mark Sutherland before they head off to cheer him on at the races. Allison spent an evening at the barns serving dinner and enjoyed meeting the sponsors and spending time with the horses.

This past week we toured a group from The Centre for Newcomers. The Centre provides services in settlement, employment and English as a Second Language for newcomers to Canada. We organized a presentation from our English Language Foundations to discuss opportunities for individuals to develop the English proficiency needed to be successful at SAIT and in an English-speaking work environment. We then toured around campus highlighting several key points of interest such as our Learner Assessment and Skills Centre, Program and Employment Advising Centre and Customer Services. We are always excited to have prospective students on campus to showcase the programs and services available. This past week has been pretty quiet for us as we have been working feverishly on some new ideas to get out in the community this summer. Some of the exciting venues so far include the Red Deer Westerner Days, Kensington's Sun and Salsa Festival, the Calgary Folk Music Festival and Marda Gras in Marda Loop. We are excited to start a new venture with SUTIL (Saskatchewan Universities and Technical Institution Liaisons) in which we will have the opportunity to travel to Saskatchewan for some of the scheduled events at the high schools to meet students and spread the word about SAIT.

New Faces

I’d like to begin by introducing myself as the newest member to re-join the Customer Services Team at SAIT. My name is Michelle Ashmore and I have been in this role since May 8, 2008. I previously worked at SAIT for 16 years but most recently worked in a similar role at another institution. I am excited to be back and working with Allison, Kyla and Carrie.

One of my first events back was an exciting one. I was helping out many of SAIT’s faculty and staff cover the exhibit booth at the Skills Canada – Provincial Competition at Stampede Park on May 22 and 23rd. Both Allison and I had the pleasure of speaking with the many Junior High and High School students who came through the event and were interested in the programs that SAIT has to offer.

SAIT students who competed in Provincials proved strong. Taking 1st and second place in Baking; 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in Culinary Arts; 1st place in Graphic Design; 1st place in IT Network Support; The Mechatronics teams took 1st and 2nd place and Restaurant Service taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Over the weekend, Allison and I set up a booth at Calgary’s Lilac Festival on May 25. The weekend was a dreary one as it was pretty wet with rain but Calgarians still came out in full force to enjoy the many artisans, food tents and entertainment kiosks set up along 4th Street. Despite the weather, we had many inquires about SAIT services and programs. Attending events such as this is a new initiative that we are taking in order to reach as many prospective students as possible and we are excited that our first attempt was well received. Watch for us at the many different festivals that our city has to offer!

Monday May 26th came quickly but with all the excitement of the Canada Skills Competition, we really didn’t notice that we didn’t get much of a weekend. The Canada Skills Competition ran May 26th and 27th and brought together the winners of the Provincial Competitions. There were competitors from all over Canada competing at Stampede Park with SAIT bring ranked number 2 in Mechatronics and number 4 in Restaurant Service. Congratulations to all SAIT’s students who competed over the 4 days and congratulations to the faculty and staff who were an integral part of SAIT’s success.

This week I had an exciting opportunity to present at a school that SAIT has never attended. École de la Rose sauvage is a French school located in the NW quadrant of Calgary, providing education to students from grades K-12. I was able to tour the school with the Principal. He showed me many exciting classrooms such as the home economics room which had a fantastic kitchen as well as the shop room which held a great woodworking lab. I have given him contact information to many academic schools here at SAIT so hopefully we can build a strong partnership. My presentation was to grade 10 and 11 students about career planning. It covered admission and application information as well as reasons to attend SAIT. This included; a wide range of student awards, campus residence, state of the art academic and recreational facilities as well as our 97% graduate employment statistics and much more. Next week will be extremely busy as I will be attending Provincial and Canadian Skills at Stampede Park as well SAIT’s Graduation Ceremonies.

Olds and the Olympics

Although the weather was not ideal (snow, sleet and rain), there was still a great turn out at last week's Career and Education Fair in Olds. Several students asked about coming next fall and if they apply, they may still get in. There are many programs at SAIT that still have availability.

The Provincial and Canadian Skills Competition/Career Path Showcase will be held in Calgary on May 22-27th where competition will range from autobody repair to welding, graphic design to baking. Students must complete projects assigned by experts in their field . If you are interested in watching the trades compete, come down to the Stampede grounds. Next year, Calgary will host the World Skills event where all the world will come to see the "olympics" of the trades.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks!

I presented in two CALM (Career and Life Management) classes, one at Earnest Manning High School in SW Calgary and the other at Lord Beaverbrook in SE Calgary. This time of year students realize the importance of researching postsecondary choices and are asking excellent questions including funding opportunities, residence, admission requirements and selection criteria.

Our School of Transportation hosted an event for Counselors at our Art Smith Aero Centre. This was a great opportunity for me to visit the campus, meet the instructors and learn more about careers in aviation. I learned that our Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Technology and Avionics Technology are the only programs of their kind in Alberta and Saskatchewan!

Recently, I also visited Morley, Alberta for their Career Information Day. Several students were interested in our professional cooking and journalism programs so I advised them to take our student for a day program to gain more information about SAIT and those programs.

Finally I just got back from a Knowledge and Employability Symposium in Edmonton. This was a conference for teachers, counsellors and high school administrators from the Edmonton Area. There was quite a bit of interest up there so I may be back in Edmonton soon.

This next week I will be in Red Deer at the Tri High Community Career Event at Notre Dame High School on Tuesday May 6th. Then to Olds on Thursday May 8th for their Career and Education Fair. If you are in the area stop by.

Road to Success

Last week I was in Rosetown, Saskatchewan attending the first ever Roads to Success Career Fair presented by Sun West School Division.

This event brought together thousands of high school students to explore the options they have for postsecondary and future careers. 30 students attended my presentation. One of the students I met with will be interviewing next week for our Nuclear Medicine Technology program in the field of diagnostic imaging (kind of like x-ray and ultrasound but uses a different approach).

Training for technology is offered also by the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST). Although we are similar schools we do offer different programs such as our aircraft programs, our radio, television and broadcast news program, our nuclear medicine and diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasound) programs and many more. When comparing postsecondary schools it is very beneficial to visit several schools and compare the differences.

SAIT is conveniently located in the NW quadrant of Calgary right off the c-train line, we have residence, a grocery store and quick access to downtown. If you are ever in Calgary please stop by we would love to show you around! Campus tours are a great way to see campus.

I just got back from visits to Penticton and Winnipeg. On April 7, I was at the Penticton Rotary Career Expo. April 9 - 10, I attended the Rotary Career Symposium in Winnipeg. These two great events brought together thousands of high school students.

Penticton was great but a challenge because after ten 20-min presentations to potential students, my voice was gone by the end. Students were very interested in the different engineering programs we offer in our MacPhail School of Energy, School of Construction, School of Manufacturing and Automation, and our School of Information and Communications Technologies. There were many questions about the transfer agreements we have for these programs.

In Winnipeg, the event was one of the largest relating to career and study options that I have ever been to. Schools were bussed in from Ontario, USA and locally. A popular SAIT program in this area is Nuclear Medicine Technology, I met several interested students. Students in this program study in Calgary, then can return home to Winnipeg for the field placement experience (also known as their practicum).

Meet the Parents

This week I attended Henry Wise Wood and Strathmore High Schools parent teacher information nights. This is a great opportunity to meet parents who play an integral role in influencing students post secondary choices.

Every year SAIT hosts a family orientation night where parents and new SAIT students receive valuable information about support services here at SAIT. Presenters are from Counselling, Program Employment and Advising, SAITSA, Alumni, Bookstore and much more. They offer advise and guidence for new students transitioning from high school to postsecondary.

Next week I will be in Penticton and Winnipeg at two large career fairs. I am excited to meet students from different provinces and teach them about the opportunities at SAIT.

Red Crow Event- March 26

Last week I attended the Red Crow Community College Career Fair located in the heart of Blackfoot territory near Cardston Alberta. Joining me at this event was Walter MacDonald White Bear who is the Chinook Lodge Aboriginal Project Coordinator. Walter’s role is to advise/counsel students, coordinate Chinook Lodge events and support initiates that involve recruitment and retention.

Chinook Lodge Aboriginal Resource Centre is a space on campus dedicated to serving the learning and training needs of Aboriginal students at SAIT. Students can make use of resources, study areas, or socialize with other students.

Walter and I promoted Chinook Lodge and the career and training opportunities that are offered at SAIT. The Career Fair was attended by over 200 students within Kainai High school and the Red Crow Community College

Traditional Native views of the environment hold that Mother Earth is a living breathing entity and provides humanity with all the necessities to sustain life. The beating of a human heart is the same as the beat of the Earth’s core, this is the symbolism behind the drum. The circle of the drum reflects the circle of life and the drum beat simulates the pulse of the Earth’s core.

I’ve spent this past week in the Calgary area speaking with grade 11 students in their CALM class. CALM stands for Career and Life Management and it is a core course in the senior high school level in Alberta. The aim of this class is to enable students to make well informed decisions and choices in all aspects of their lives. My 45 min presentation covers SAIT programs, admission requirements, application process, student services, activities, residence and financial information. I quiz students at the end to see if they were paying attention and reward them with candy, it usually gets their attention.

CALM class presentations are a large component of what I do when I am in Calgary. It is a great opportunity to speak with students gearing up for postsecondary. It is especially beneficial for students interested in programs that are high demand, as I give them information on how to prepare early for program selection.

I’m home from another visit to our Calgary Connections office in Edmonton. This is the last time I will be at this office till October. The University of Calgary and I are already thinking about advising dates for next year. If you can recommend a convenient time for us to be there please let me know.

My next big road trip is the week of April 7th which will bring me to career fairs in Penticton and Winnipeg, I am looking forward to recruiting in these areas.

I'm back from Portage College’s Region Career & Education Expo in Lac La Biche. This was my first time to this area so it was an interesting trip.

I spoke with lots of students interested in attending SAIT’s Pre-employment programs. These programs provide hands-on training with many offering a jump-start into an apprenticed trade. Programs range from six to 18 weeks in length.

I am heading to Edmonton on March 12th and 13th for advising appointments in the Calgary Connections office. If you are interested in learning more about a specific programs, admission process, scholarships, residence, athletics and much more I would be more than happy to speak with you so please stop by.

I was back in British Columbia for another busy recruiting week. We traveled over 1500 kms and visited some very interesting towns. In Northern BC, the forestry industry is very strong and there were many logging trucks on the highways. The scenery in this area is beautiful with lots of wildlife to look out for.

Even though the schools we visited were small, sometimes less than a hundred students, they were all interested to learn about post secondary in Alberta. I had lots of inquiries about our engineering technology programs including Civil Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Power Engineering.Not only were the students interested in completing a diploma but they were curious about our transfer options to complete a degree. SAIT transfer agreements are continuously expanding and are an integral part of the services we provide to our students.

I'll be heading up to Lac La Biche next week for a Region Career & Education Expo. Come explore the North and visit me there!

While Ross is busy traveling internationally, I spent the last week attending British Columbia’s Education and Career Fairs in Vancouver and Kelowna. These are BC’s largest career and planning events and bring in thousands of participants and exhibitors.

SAIT is building awareness in these areas so it was a great opportunity to promote programs and career opportunities for students. I had a lot of questions about the employability of SAIT graduates and referred to SAIT’s Graduate Employment Statistics. People were very impressed to learn that our graduate employment rate is 99%.

I will be back in BC next week for another week with Educational Liaison Association of Alberta (ELAA) answering students questions and giving information about SAIT's programs..

Update from the International Side... aka: The Sunny Side of the Street

OK, up till now it's been all "domestic" talk on the SAIT blog, but guess what? SAIT Polytechnic is also very active in reaching out to international students too. We even have an international centre website for these potential students. And as you may have guessed, I'm the lucky duck that does a great deal of the overseas travel.

That's me in the photo, Ross, standing in front of the entranceway into the Forbidden City in Beijing. Technically, I'm standing at the edge of Tiananmen Square. And for a vicarious look into the Forbidden City check out the flick The Last Emperor. Very cool ending but I won't give it away.

So my 2008 travel first took me to Beijing for "Canada Information Days" It was basically a mini Canadian Education Fair, held on January 8 & 9th. Most of the events I attend are sponsored by the Canadian Education Centre Network, a non-profit group founded in 1995 with support from the Government of Canada to promote Canada's exceptional education system. SAIT programs were a big hit at this annual Beijing event.

In fact, the largest group of international students on SAIT's campus are from China. But as any SAIT student will tell you, ours is a very ethnically diverse campus. This year alone we have over 840 international students on campus, and we have SAIT graduates from over 55 different countries around the world! Very cool stuff.

Also in January, I attended CEC Network events in three cities in Indonesia (Surabaya, Jakarta, and Bandung) and one stop in Vietnam (Ho Chi Min City, aka: Saigon). We actually have over 20 Vietnamese students currently on campus, who knew? And as if my schedule wasn't tight enough on this January travel, I slipped in and out of Singapore and visited the CEC office there where I met with three students.

One student, with a medical background, applied for our Diagnostic Medical Sonography program (...the what? You know, ultra-sound stuff). Recently all our Health and Public Safety programs opened up to our international student and since then the response has been very high. The other two students I met at the CEC Singapore office began the application process for Hospitality Management and Business Administration. Both are always favorites among our international students as both programs offer some very unique features.

And in an unrelated story, I've seen some interesting things on my travels so I thought I'd include a few crazy picks here. Why not, eh? It the photo of an indoor ski hill in Dubai. Below the photo is of cows chillin' out on the city streets of New Delhi. I actually grew up on dairy farm near a ski hill but somehow the memories didn't look like this!

Another successful Open House!

This weekend SAIT opened its doors to thousands interested in learning about SAIT’s programs and services. Each school had exhibits, tours and instructors available to answer questions. There was also a SAIT lifestyle area which displayed student clubs, sports and services available.

Those who attended were able to fill out a complimentary application and also entered our contest to win tuition. This prize package includes:

- Up to $5,000 towards tuition and fees in a full-time day program beginning fall 2008. Tuition applies to first year of study.

I spent the day advising prospective students at the Calgary Connections office. Calgary Connections is the Edmonton office of the University of Calgary, SAIT Polytechnic and the Calgary Health Region.

I spoke with several students interested in programs including Geomatics Engineering Technology, Environmental Technology, Emergency Medical Technology- Paramedic program. With SAIT's Open House approaching on Feb 1st and 2nd some will make the trip to Calgary to learn more about these programs.

I am scheduled to be back at the Calgary Connections office on March 12th & 13th.

This week I participated in Lakeland College’s Counsellor Update in Lloydminister. In attendance were 40 counsellors and career practitioners from Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Each post-secondary was able to update participants on all that is new for 2008/09 admission. I had a lot of questions about our new residence, as students are excited to move to Calgary.

One the way home we drove past a pretty scary sight. A semi truck that had a tractor on back was caught on fire! We must have driven by shortly after this happened as the flames and smoke was very intense. Fortunately fire and ambulance were right behind and no one was injured. This was a good reminder about the importance of driving safe on the highways.

I cannot believe it is already 2008!

I have mixed emotions about beginning this New Year. Sadly SAIT has said good bye to my colleague and friend Jay Decore. He has moved on to pursue a communications career and I wish him all the best.

With his departure I will be extremely busy; however, I will be attending many exciting recruitment events that I am looking forward to including Lloydminister and Edmonton.

I will be in Edmonton at the Calgary Connections office on January 24, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. to give free SAIT program advising . No appointment necessary. It will be held at 10304 Jasper Avenue (Melton Building). If you are interested call 780.408.4821.

The ELAA 2007 tour with other post secondary institutes wound down this month. We were in Central Alberta and at many schools in Calgary, both areas where students are very interested in attending SAIT.

Each day, I attended around three events and was kept on my toes answering all sorts of questions about SAIT’s programs and services.

This was a great season for traveling as the mild weather and roads seemed to cooperate with us. I am excited to have a break now and enjoy the holidays.

After a rocky start I finally made it on the road for my recruiting week in Western Alberta, joining me was Steve from the University of Calgary. This week we visited schools in Edson, Hinton, Jasper, Drayton Valley, Spruce Grove, Whitecourt and Westlock. This was my first time in Jasper and I was amazed at how beautiful it is, and how many caribou we saw. I stayed at a fantastic place called Park Place Inn, I would highly recommend it.

While in Drayton Valley I met our new SAIT mascot. He is a three week old puppy and was sure a big hit with the students.

I answered lots of questions during this trip about our School of Business it seems everyone wants to own their own company.

I am back in Saskatchewan to attend the 10th annual See Your Future Education and Career Fair in Saskatoon and Regina. This time I was able to fly, so the 48 min flight was much more enjoyable than the seven hour road trip. As a new recruiter these events were certainty the largest I have attended. This picture is looking out from my booth.

The organizers anticipated that over 1,000 participants would attend from all over Saskatchewan. I was set up next to NAIT which supported us promoting technical schools in Alberta. I was surprised that many students had not heard of SAIT so I referred to us as the Calgary SIAST. The students that did know about SAIT were very keen to learn more about their program of interest. I had lots of great questions about Health and Information and Communication Technology programs.

As SAIT’s application date is November 1st it surprised students to know that they can already apply for post-secondary.

I traveled from Saskatoon to Regina with St. Mary's and University of Calgary. As you can see traveling light meant different things to each of us.

It’s been a busy week for me. I started of at a weekend event called Dreamcatcher Aboriginal Youth Conference. This was in Edmonton at the Grant MacEwan College. It brought together youth from Alberta’s Aboriginal tribes. There were interesting sessions for participants to attend which included: music and dance, story telling, youth empowerment to name a few.

After the event I headed off to Lloydminster to start recruiting in Eastern Alberta. It was a short recruiting week that took me through the beautiful rural Alberta areas of Provost, Wainwright and Vegerville. It is the perfect time for travel as the fall colors are beautiful. One of the coolest things I saw was hay bails set up to say “HI” unfortunately I didn’t have my camera ready. I did many presentations to students during this trip and was able to answer lots of questions about SAIT’s programs, and student services.

I headed back to Edmonton where Jay met me for ELAA’s Annual Counsellor Conference. This was a great opportunity to meet Counsellors and Career Practitioners from all over Alberta. After the event all of the recruiters went to West Edmonton Mall for an evening of bowling. I particularly enjoyed this night as I beat Jay (who claimed to be a competitive bowler) by 12 points.

Southern Hospitality

September 24 – 27, 2007

While Allison was enjoying the scenery of Southern Saskatchewan, Jeffrey and I visited Southern Alberta. This included: Vulcan, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Dunmore, Brooks, Standard and Bow Island. I have never experienced such hospitality! Every school we visited had great meals or snacks for us to enjoy! Bow Island in particular put on a fantastic lunch for us. We waddled back to our booths and were stuffed for the afternoon.

This was a training week for Jeffrey and he certainly learned about SAIT’s Apprenticeship programs. We were inundated with questions about Welding, Plumbing, Mechanics and Carpentry. The event in Dunmore was hugely successful, given the crazy rain and wind storms that were taking place. While staying at our hotel, Jeffrey made the most of the pool, while I caught up with former recruiters living in Medicine Hat. It was a great week!

The long flat road to Moose Jaw took me to 3 career fairs in Assiniboia, Swift Current and Maple Creek. I was very grateful to have the company of Alethea from St. Mary’s University College to make the seven hour road trip tolerable. It sure is different from the mountain terrain of the Kootneys.

I spoke with many students interested in our health programs, in particular Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Medical Radiologic Technology and Medical Laboratory Technology. It was encouraging to speak with students excited to attend SAIT.

During the breaks I ate at several fantastic restaurants and I now understand how new recruiters typically gain 15 pounds in the first season.

East Kootenays

Sept 17 - 21
Allison and Jay continued on with our adventure through the eastern Kootneys. We visited eight different schools over 5 days. We visited some amazing schools and saw the most beautiful scenery.

There were a lot of great questions about SAIT’s Hospitality programs such as: Professional Cooking, Baking and Pastery Arts and Hospitality Management. We learned that this region takes their hospitality very seriously.

We were lucky to stay in some truly fantastic hotels, including the allegedly haunted Hume Hotel in Nelson. Jay claims to have heard “scratching” one night in his hotel room, but that may have been just a result of over eating at some of Nelson’s fabulous restaurants.

SAIT was very well known in this area and many students mentioned they had friends or relatives already attending SAIT. It was really great to hear about all the success stories from these students.
